Black or dark brown and varying in size:

Symptoms: tiny, dark brown to black spots surrounded by a yellow halo.
- Bacterial spot

Symptoms: small, dark brown to black circular spots, initially water-soaked, coalescing and becoming angular, sometimes surrounded by a yellow halo.
- Early blight | See factsheet for more information (LIHREC)

Symptoms: initially appears as irregular lesions on oldest mature leaves around the ground. Lesions expand and become dark brown and necrotic with concentric black rings, giving a target-like appearance. Chlorotic area surrounded lesions may be present.
- Gray leaf spot

Symptoms: small brownish lesions becoming irregular and often surrounded by chlorotic areas. Lesions will dry and develop cracks. More common in southern States.
- Septoria leaf spot | See factsheet for more information (LIHREC)

Symptoms: initially small, circular water-soaked spots beginning on older leaves. Spots enlarge in diameter with a black or brown border and with gray centers that are speckled with small, black fruiting bodies.
- Target spot

Symptoms: initially tiny lesions that expand, surrounded by yellow halos. Lesions coalesce and lead to collapse of foliar tissue. More common in southern States.

Symptoms: tiny, irregular brown spots, streaks, and ring spots that usually form on the youngest leaves. More common in southern States.
